Odessa Museum of History and Local Lore

Odessa Museum of History and Local Lore (OHLM) is a regional museum of the history of the city of Odessa and the region.

Museum of History and Local LoreIn 1948, the first exhibition "Heroic Defense of Odessa" was held, and the first exposition appeared on this site, on the basis of which the Republican Museum of Defense of Odessa later appeared.

But already in 1956, the Odessa State Museum of History and Local Lore opened its doors, which was created on the basis of the Odessa Regional Museum of Local History and the Museum of Defense of Odessa.

Collections of the XVII - XIX centuries, documents, printed editions, objects of applied and visual arts connected with the history of Odessa and the region, which in their turn once belonged to the Museum of the Odessa Society of History and Antiquity, the Museum of the Book, the Museum of Old Odessa and others, were The main part of the Odessa Museum of History and Local Lore.

Odessa Museum of Local History is considered one of the best museums of local lore in Ukraine as it has more than 120,000 exhibits.

Odessa Museum of Local History preserves to this day:
Documents signed by Catherine II, Potemkin, Suvorov, Zubov, Kutuzov, De Ribas, Langeron; Architectural and engineering projects of buildings; Graphic and pictorial works of Odessa artists; Portrait painting of the XVIII - XX centuries; A collection of icons, weapons and household items, numismatic and cartographic materials.

In the course of scientific research and collecting work, other expositions are created that reveal the most diverse aspects of life in Odessa and the region.

The exposition tells about the Ukrainian Cossacks of the XV - XVIII centuries.

Odessa Museum of History and Local LoreUnique publications of Cossack antiquity include printed editions, firearms and cold steel, paintings, ethnographic materials. They once were part of the collection of the Museum of the Imperial Odessa Society of History and Antiquities, later became part of the exhibits of the Odessa Historical and Local History Museum.

The exposition "Odessa and the Territory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" (author of the project of Artistic Director G. Emelianov) is housed in a separate building and reveals three main periods: the defense of Odessa in 1941; The occupation and the underground-partisan movement in 1941-1944; Liberation of the city and the land from the Nazi invaders in 1944.

As for the latter, it is directly related to the Odessa region, on the territory inhabited by representatives of more than 100 nationalities.
