Odessa Museum of Western and Oriental Art is one of the largest art museums in Ukraine. His collection is considered to be one of the best collections of foreign art.

In the twenty-three halls of the first and second floors, the exposition of three departments is located: ancient, Western European and Oriental art. Odessa collection is distinguished by a high artistic level due to the presence of a number of works by outstanding masters.

The collection of Western European painting is the core of the museum collection. It covers the art of the beginning of the 16th century until the second half of the 20th century, from the Renaissance to the artistic trends of our time.

Art of the countries of the East.

The department of Oriental art exists in the museum since 1951. Chronologically the collection covers the period from the XVI to the middle of the XX century. In the three halls of the Oriental section there are exhibits that introduce the art of China, India, Iran, Japan, Mongolia and other Asian countries. Among them - ancient Chinese porcelain and Japanese dishes for tea ceremony, artistic varnishes, carvings from semiprecious stones and ivory, embroidered panels, carpets, as well as bronze and wooden sculpture depicting the deities of the Taoist, Shinto and Hindu cults.

Odessa Museum of Western and Oriental art from the very beginning of its foundation was formed as a classical museum, and one of its three departments was originally the department of ancient art. After all, antiquity is the source from which all the subsequent art derived inspiration, from where its stylistic variety grew.

Central Hall

The works of well-known authors of Europe and America of the 17th-19th centuries, such as Thomas Lawrence, Domeneko Morelli, Alexander John White, R. Hölbe, Daniel Hodowiecki, Ch. Tzokk and others were collected.

Living room of the 19th century

As the name implies, this room contains works of European art from the early 19th century, such as Lucio Massari, Hendrik Schefels, Johann Baptiste Lumpy Sr., Giuseppe Adomfo, Luigi Bizi and others.

Painting of Spain and Flanders

In the XVII century, the traditions of Dutch art continued in Flanders and Holland. On their basis, related, but distinctive Flemish and Dutch schools of painting.

Spanish painting of the XVII century is a powerful and original branch of European art of this era. No progressive trend of painting of that time has not gone unnoticed by the artists of Spain, who reflected in their paintings a complex and volatile world.

The art of Italy

The fine art of Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries is represented in the museum by the works of outstanding masters of various art schools: Alessandro Magnasco, Francesco Guardi, Bernardo Belotto, Marco Ricci, Pietro Tempesta and works of unknown artists related to the circle of Andrea Celesti and Antonio Canaletto.

The art of the countries of the East

The Oriental Art Department of the Odessa Museum of Western and Oriental Art was created in 1951 on the basis of exhibits handed over from the State Museum of Oriental Art, the State Hermitage Museum and the Kiev Museum of Western and Oriental Art (now the Bogdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum).

Also in the basis of the eastern collection were exhibits from private collections, transferred in the 1920-1930's. In total, the eastern collection of OMZVI has about 2500 exhibits. The most iconic objects were included in the permanent exposition of the museum, which introduces the art of China, Japan, India, Iran and other countries of the East.

Each region is represented by the most characteristic works of decorative and applied art, painting, sculpture, jewelry art, which demonstrate the diversity and uniqueness of Eastern culture.

Hall of Art of the 19th century

The hall contains the works of the 19th century of Europe, such famous authors as Verdeiden Isidore, Shenn Alois, Heinrich Ritzau, Mihai Munkachi, Richard Otto, Albert Gustav Edelfelt and many others.

Art of Holland of the 17th century

Collection of Dutch painting of the XVII century, which gives an idea of the "Golden Age" of the heyday of painting in Holland and introduces the works: Cornelis Lelyenberg, Frans Hals, Hendrik Mommers.

The Art of Germany and the Netherlands

Painting of the Netherlands and Germany XVI - XVII centuries.

The paintings in this room represent a significant historical and artistic value. Almost all of them show the work of the workshops of famous painters of the 16th-17th centuries and embody various trends in the art of the Netherlands and Germany of that period.
